Chelsea fans are understandably excited when January comes around. Their team has been transfer mad in recent windows. But that’s not expected to continue.

Chelsea not about to spend much – if anything – as Blues look to head into the black

The Athletic has just done a good little summary of our potential transfer business, and this puts our plans pretty starkly:

“The majority of transfer funds and business are being saved for the summer, so do not expect Chelsea to be leading the spending charts next month. There will continue to be outgoings as well as incomings, so Chelsea’s net spend will remain in a good place.”

What that means is – don’t expect us to sign anyone big, or perhaps anyone at all.

They also point out that, having been fined €31m by UEFA in the summer for overspending, the Blues are especially keen to sit tight. They’re comfortable they will pass all the UEFA and Premier League tests going forward – but only if they keep things sensible.

We would expect the addition of perhaps one talented under 21 one player from somewhere exotic for something below £15m to be our biggest move of the winter window – if there are any at all.

In other news…

Another player on the move could be Marc Guiu – but he will have to wait until the summer before it happens. This looks to be another wasted season for him, and we don’t expect him to have the patience for many more of those.

Even though we don’t expect a first team signing for Chelsea, there’s a lot to be done in this January transfer window. Two players who have been in the out tray for a while are considered the “biggest priorities” for the Blues to shift.
