16 November – Five Memorable Celtic Moments on this Day

Five memorable Celtic moments, with a nod to the late Celtic Historian and Celtic Star legend David Potter, on this day starting on 16 November 1907…

ONE- SATURDAY 16 NOVEMBER 1907 – Even without Jamie Weir and Davie Hamilton, Celtic are still too good for Queen’s Park whom they beat 4-1 at Celtic Park today before 14,000 spectators. Peter Somers scores twice, Davie Hamilton one and Willie Kivlichan one as well.

TWO – SATURDAY 16 NOVEMBER 1935 – For the second week in a row, Celtic win 5-0. Last week it was Hibs at Easter Road, today it is Arbroath at Parkhead. Jimmy McGrory scores twice, Frank Murphy and Jimmy Delaney notch one each and Willie Lyon scores with a penalty.

The only difference in the scorers from last week is that Willie Buchan scores last week instead of Willie Lyon. Clearly a good team is developing at Celtic Park.

THREE – SATURDAY 16 NOVEMBER 1963 – A disappointing result but a good game as Celtic draw 1-1 with Hibs at Easter Road today. Bobby Murdoch scores the opening goal for Celtic, and then Willie Hamilton (whom Jock Stein would later say was his best ever player) equalised with a brilliant goal for Hibs.

FOUR – WEDNESDAY 16 NOVEMBER 1977 – It is possible that something may yet be salvaged from the disaster that was late 1977. The transfer of Dalglish and the subsequent all-encompassing air of depression has seen the League campaign in tatters and an early exit from Europe, but tonight sees the team qualify for the semi-finals of the Scottish League Cup as they beat St Mirren 2-0 with Paul Wilson and Johnny Doyle scoring the goals.

FIVE – SUNDAY 16 NOVEMBER 2008 – On Celtic’s first ever visit to New Douglas Park on SPL business, they are more than a little lucky to leave with all three points. Offiong scores first for Hamilton, but then Shunsuke Nakamura scores with a penalty kick before Paul Hartley notches a late winner for Celtic. 5,550 are there at the partially completed stadium.
