There has always been an explosive rivalry between Munich’s soccer clubs, and now the president of the Lions has come out with harsh words, attacking Bayern president Herbert Hainer.

Gernot Mang, President of 1860 Munich, didn’t mince his words during a public appearance at the Deutsches Theater. FC Bayern in particular got his comeuppance. In a talk with the Abendzeitung newspaper, the 57-year-old clearly criticized the self-image of the city rivals: „A little humility would do the club good.“

„We are Munich’s great love,“ Mang emphasized, adding that FC Bayern is not a role model for him, but an antithesis: „It’s a commercial club, run like an American. It’s not about atmosphere, but simply about money.“ Mang used the stage to highlight the differences between the two clubs – especially in terms of identity and proximity to the fans. „Our fan store is right in the center on Marienplatz and where is their fan store? In the side street?“

„And who are you?“ – an encounter with Hainer

Mang also shared a personal anecdote. He met Bayern president Herbert Hainer at the Bavarian Football Association – and was apparently treated brusquely: „I introduced myself briefly and he said: ‚And who are you? From Sechzig? And what do you do there?‘ Exactly the same as you, I’m the president of the e.V.“ The scene remained in Mang’s memory – also because of the Bayern boss’s reaction: „That shows again that a little humility would do this club good.“

Particularly piquant: Just a few days before Mang’s statements, this very FC Bayern had gone public together with 1860 to present an unusual cooperation. Both clubs are working together with the Bavarian Football Association and other Bavarian clubs to train up to 5,000 children’s coaches over the next four years – a collaboration that BFV President Christoph Kern described as historic.
