Bild reports that 1.FC Köln hope to receive a fee from Florian Wirtz’s pending transfer from Bayer Leverkusen to Liverpool this summer.
While negotiations over Wirtz are ongoing, Köln will try and receive a fee from the transfer, which could go above €130m due to the 22-year-old being previously at the club.
Due to FIFA rules, Köln could be entitled to up to 5% of the fee as Wirtz spent nine years at the club before moving to Leverkusen in 2020. The 22-year-old is also a native of Köln, having grown up in Pulheim just the centre.
A calculation of the years that Wirtz spent at Effzeh means that the club could likely earn around €3.2m from the pending transfer. However, Köln want to try and get more, as club President Werner Wolf said in a recent podcast:
“Of course we are looking into it. We know what we are entitled to and will fight for it.”
If Köln can argue that Wirtz spent longer at the club, which counts towards the training years, then they could earn up to €7.25m if the transfer fee for the 22-year-old is €150m.
When Wirtz crossed the banks of the Rhein in 2020 to move to Leverkusen. die Werkself are said to have broken a gentleman’s agreement between Köln, Leverkusen and Borussia Mönchenglabdach, which was in place to prevent clubs from poaching youth players from one another. Leverkusen’s argument was that Wirtz was being brought in to play for the first team.
