After Paderborn and Bielefeld’s home wins on Friday, the rest of the fifth round 2. Bundesliga matches have been played in the last couple of days. On Saturday, league leaders Hannover dropped points for the first time when they lost to Hertha Berlin. Among Sunday’s results, Fortuna Düsseldorf continued their progress with a win in Preußen Münster.
Hannover host this week’s Topspiel, but the second-half wasn’t a pleasant viewing for their fans. Going into the fixture, Hertha Berlin had no wins to their name. However, Marten Winkler, Dawid Kownacki and Luca Schuler scored their first goals to ensure a 3-0 victory at the home of the team that won the first four games of the season.
Kownacki, who also assisted Winkler’s opener moments after Tjark Ernst pulled a big save to deny Hannover’s half-time substitute Luca Schuler, has finally made a big impact after a slow start at the club from the capital city. Hannover remain at the top with 12 points after five games.
On the contrary, Holstein Kiel returned home with three points from Schalke courtesy of an early goal. Alexander Bernhardsson’s deflected shot silenced the packed crowd at the Veltins-Arena as Kiel recorded back-to-back wins away from home. Schalke, who would’ve climbed to the top of the table with a two-goal win, sit seventh with nine points.
Instead, Karlsruher SC are now sitting in second place after they defeated Nürnberg 2-1. Christian Eichner’s side maintained their perfect home record with a third win of the season at the BBBank Wildpark. The captain Marvin Wanitzek scored his second goal of the season to win it for Karlsruhe, fifteen minutes from time.
In Saturday’s other game, Darmstadt came from behind to beat Eintracht Braunschweig by the same scoreline. Isac Lidberg scored his fifth goal of the season before Matej Maglica’s 86th-minute free-kick secured the win for Florian Kohfeldt’s side.
On Sunday, there were also two wins for the visiting sides. Just like Darmstadt, Fortuna Düsseldorf completed their comeback win in Preußen Münster with two second-half goals. Summer signings Cedric Itten and Florent Muslija scored the goals for the promotion hopefuls.
Similarly, new signings Naatan Skyttä and Ivan Prtajin (2) were on the scoresheet in Kaiserslautern's 3-0 win in Fürth. Paul Joly, who is another new name to the league, provided the assists for the first two goals in his second appearance for Kaiserslautern.
Only one game ended in a draw on matchday five. Younes Ebnoutalib’s fourth goal of the season salvaged a draw for Elversberg against newly-promoted Dynamo Dresden in the 92nd minute.
