The Owls were set to sanction the exit of the talented 21-year-old, who had a breakthrough second tier term last season.

Gassama registered seven goals and was a standout performer in an Owls side that was severely disrupted off the pitch, gaining vital Championship experience and destined to reach higher levels in the game.

While his move to Rangers was expected to go through, journalist Rob Staton has revealed that the deal is now in doubt, with the situation something to keep an eye on over the coming days and weeks.

Speaking before the latest developments to FLW, pundit Lee Hendrie commented about Gassama’s proposed move to Ibrox.

Speaking exclusively to Football League World, former Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie said a £2.5 million deal for Djeidi Gassama was a “steal”, questioning Sheffield Wednesday’s resolve to accept such a low figure.

Hendrie said: “At Sheffield Wednesday, they’ve agreed a £2.5 million deal with Rangers for Gassama.

“With the situation they’re in at the moment and the way that things are going, it feels like it’s crumbling.

When you’re selling players for £2.5 million these days, it’s a real steal, particularly with players that have got potential and that’s what he (Gassama) has.

“You’d rather keep hold of him and try and get the best out of him next season, particularly if there is to be this takeover that can take the club forward and bring fresh faces in that might just give them that extra boost, and then you look at it next season.

“But £2.5m is nothing these days in the transfer window.”

Latest Rangers, Djeidi Gassama update should be a wake up call to Sheffield Wednesday

With Djeidi Gassama’s move to Rangers now up in the air, it should be a wake-up call to Sheffield Wednesday to at least demand a lot more money for his services.

Gassama is a rising player in the English game, with his devastating pace and fearlessness to take on and beat opposition defenders two fabulous qualities that have made him a force to be reckoned with in the second tier.

With financial resources strained at Hillsborough, Wednesday should be demanding at least double for a player that has such potential, with Lee Hendrie quite rightly alluding to the fact that £2.5 million is peanuts in modern-day football.

If Wednesday could end up keeping Gassama, then another season under his belt could bring about an improved number of attacking returns, which may end up being crucial to where the Yorkshire outfit finds themselves at the end of next season.

While it is a mess currently, this development could be the reminder the club needs to not undervalue their players, particularly ones that can generate such sizeable fees for their age, potential and ability.
