The writing appears to be on the wall for Jack Grealish. After failing to nail down a starting spot in Man City’s worst season under Pep Guardiola, he was subsequently left out of the squad for the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup.
Now, Rayan Cherki, who provided six fewer goal contributions last season alone (32) than Grealish has throughout his entire Man City career (38), it’s looking more than likely that the £100 million man is shipped out of the Etihad this summer.
Considering his massive £300,000 a week contract, he’s going to have to take a pretty considerable pay cut wherever he goes. Here are three clubs we believe would be able to get the best out of the huge-calved England international.
We couldn’t help but be a little romantic with this one. Ever since his move, Grealish has remained in love with his boyhood club. It’s where he became the man he is today, with the shackles off, he may be able to rediscover the form that made City splash the cash in the first place.
Villa would have to sell before they make any kind of move, however. The club are currently spending over 90% of their revenue on player wages, earning the ire of the Premier League’s infamous PSR. Missing out on the Champions League didn’t make it any easier either.
Unai Emery is also in need of attacking reinforcements following the end of Marcus Rashford’s and Marco Asensio’s loans. Of all the clubs on this list, if a move is made, we can confidently say Grealish would pick them.
Everton are seriously on the up under David Moyes. With an exciting move to their new Hill Dickinson all set for next season, a marquee signing, perhaps Grealish, would get a usually downtrodden set of fans on side.
Grealish would be a big fish in a small pond once again, able to be the main man he once was before Guardiola got his hands on him. Like Villa, Everton are in need of some attacking flair; only Dwight McNeil reached double figures in terms of goal contributions last season, with ten.
Like Villa again, the finances would be a real issue. Grealish is still under contract with Man City until the summer of 2027, so, along with what would likely be the biggest deal at the club, Everton would have to fork out some sort of transfer fee.
Bouyed by their first trophy in 17 years after their 1-0 win over Man United in maybe the worst Europa League final in history, Spurs now have a taste for silverware, and could be set to have a busy transfer window in order to sate that hunger.
Grealish was heavily linked with Tottenham before ultimately ending up with Man City. He was a lot younger then, and considering the North London club’s recent transfer activity, it may go against their mantra of signing young talent.
If Tottenham’s 2024-25 season is anything to go by, their in need of Premier League experience. Grealish has that in spades; in fact, he has plenty of experience winning the thing. He may have to fight for his place, but competition can be healthy.
No matter who Grealish joins, it’s not going to be an easy deal to get done, simply due to the amount of money it would cost to sign him. If he ends up anywhere, we reckon it will be a loan back at Aston Villa. Somehow, that just feels right.
