The evergreen Luka Modrić has once again had a season where he has been a key presence in the middle of the pitch for his side.

The legendary Croatian, who turns 41 in September, has featured in every league game bar one for Milan in Serie A this season after arriving at San Siro last summer on a free.

Now, with the season drawing to a close in a little over a month’s time, uncertainty surrounds Modrić’s future. Even though the Croatia international has an option to extend his stay at Milan by another year, as reported by Sky, via Calciomercato, there are three conditions that must be fulfilled before he decides to put pen to paper on that renewal agreement.

Firstly, the Rossoneri must be in the Champions League next season. They are third in the league table at the moment, but qualification to Europe’s premier competition is not a foregone conclusion, with teams as low Roma in sixth, who are six points off them, capable of catching them off-guard. This is particularly relevant given Milan’s recent form; they have managed just two wins in last five league outings.

Secondly, Massimiliano Allegri must remain at the club. The 58-year-old has done a commendable job since returning to the club to lift them from their mid-table mediocrity of the season before. At one point, Milan were in the mix for the title, and even though their form has fallen off considerably since then, Champions league qualification remains well within their grasp. Returning to Europe should ensure another season at the helm for the six-time Serie A-winning coach.

Lastly, Modrić must be given some degree of assurances regarding Milan’s ability to compete on all fronts next season. Their fall-off in the second of this campaign has hinted heavily at an exodus in the summer, with big names like Rafa Leao and Christian Pulisic also expected to be on the market. Regardless of the present-day financial realities of Italian football, Milan will go into the summer needing significant reinforcements, to which end retaining Modrić will be a key objective as well.
