On Saturday, NJ/NY Gotham FC opened the 2026 NWSL season with a match against Boston Legacy FC. The road fixture saw the Bats face the expansion side for the first time, where it was unknown what the home side would be like. Boston ended up battling and making life difficult in the first half, but in the end, the NJ/NY team came out on top, winning 1-0.
It took time for Gotham to grow into the match, and the ladies were stronger in the second half. That was also when the lone goal was scored by Esther González. The forward, who came on as a substitute to start the second half, found the back of the net in the 55th minute.
Meanwhile, Juan Carlos Amorós put out a great Starting XI. Tierna Davidson was, of course, not ready, and González, who took some time off on maternity leave earlier in the preseason, did not start. But regulars like Ann-Katrin Berger, Rose Lavelle, Jaedyn Shaw, and Emily Sonnett were all a part of the lineup, and truthfully, they were difference makers in the match.
There is plenty to talk about after the win. Here are three things we learned from Gotham FC’s season opener against Boston Legacy.
The NJ/NY side signed four rookies this offseason, and Jordynn Dudley is one of the players who should be a contender for the Rookie of the Year. The forward had a superb collegiate career with Florida State University, and now, she has officially made her NWSL debut.
The new Gotham FC player came on after halftime, and she was immediately influential up front. In fact, if she had not fallen and slipped, then the ball would not have fallen to González to score the game-winner. Likely, Dudley would have taken a shot. And she had a moment later on toward the end of the match to find her first goal. But ultimately, Casey Murphy made the stop to keep the score close.
Dudley also looked impressive in her play, and was comfortable on the ball. But one aspect that was noticeable was that she was fouled quite often, and even had moments when the Boston players pushed her to the ground. In other words, she got a nice welcome to the league. But she kept her cool and played on.
Gotham FC, despite it being early, has a solid rookie on their hands. It would not be surprising if she scores her first NWSL goal early on in the 2026 campaign.
As mentioned, González scored the lone goal for the Bats. In complete honesty, this was not shocking by any means. She competed for the Golden Boot last season, and her teammates need to score more when she does not. But thankfully, while nobody else found the back of the net, she was able to do so and lead Gotham to a win.
The goal was another fantastic one, too. Lilly Reale, who was near the end line, sent the ball into the box towards Dudley. The rookie, as mentioned, slipped and was not able to take a chance on the goal. However, it worked out in the end, for the ball fell to González. The Spaniard subsequently looked at the goal and, with one touch, sent it into the right side, with the ball slightly curling near the ground.
Once again, the striker showed why she is one of the top scorers in the NWSL. It is fitting that she began the season with a goal, especially since she missed some time due to injury toward the end of 2025. González should be in the Golden Boot race again, and now, she already has the first goal.
Gotham FC might have been the visiting team, but they were a part of history. Not only will Boston Legacy have that they played their inaugural match and first home game against the Bats, but the NJ/NY side will mark that their club was the last NWSL team to face the previous Boston team and the first to face the current one.
Moreover, it is in the history books that the Legacy officially has the largest attendance for an expansion team in their inaugural home match. 30,207 fans were at Gillette Stadium for the big day.
