After failing to accomplish much in this summer’s Club World Cup tournament, Inter Miami has its sights on the MLS playoffs, where they’re matched up with Nashville SC and have already won the first game of the best-of-three series against the Boys in Gold.
They’re focused on winning a league title for one Lionel Messi for the first time. We, on the other hand, have the luxury of peering even further into the future. Who might profitably join Leo and Inter when the winter transfer window opens after the new year? Our completely unfounded speculation awaits you, dear reader, so read on.
Inter already has so many Argentinians playing for them, how about adding the starting goalkeeper from their World Cup-winning squad? The netminder already seems to be on the outs with Aston Villa, who changed his jersey number from 1 to 23 this past offseason and are mucking around in mid-table in the Premier League as well as in the Europa League, where they just lost to [checks notes] Go Ahead Eagles.
If Villa have a replacement lined up, maybe a fresh start and a title push would be exactly what Martínez needs. It might even bolster his standing with Argentina’s national team. Emi is overrated as a week-to-week netminder, but he’d still be an improvement on Óscar Ustari in Miami’s net.
Jordi Alba and Sérgio Busquets are no longer back there in Inter’s defense, so the Herons need someone to backstop Sr. Messi and keep the goals out.
The Brazilian has looked a step slow in the Premier League this season and possibly the seasons before that, but maybe that’s just the bad vibes at Manchester United getting to him. Look what escaping that club did for the careers of Marcus Rashford, Antony, and Rasmus Højlund.
Casemiro’s wealth of experience as a midfield stopper would be invaluable to Inter, and his range of passing would aid Messi and the rest of the offense. He looks set to captain Brazil in next year’s World Cup, and manning a functioning engine room in South Beach would be better for his rep than continuing on in Manchester, especially if United keep floundering like they have since Sir Alex Ferguson left.
Oh, I’m just kidding. The aging megastar seems perfectly happy scoring a goal per game in the Saudi league, and a partnership with Messi wouldn’t work on the pitch given that neither player generates any defensive pressure without the ball anymore.
Still, wouldn’t it be fascinating seeing these guys trying to share the same locker room? What wouldn’t you pay to see the look on Ronaldo’s face when Miami’s fans cheer for the Argentinian?
However, if we’re serious about giving Messi a running partner on offense, how about…
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia is not leaving PSG to join Inter, so let’s find a more realistic target. San Diego FC might not want to give up on their very first designated player after only one season with him, but then, we don’t know what went down in that locker-room verbal altercation that resulted in his public apology and some murkiness over whether he’s still with the team.
The Mexican attacker’s speed up front could still stretch opposing defenses and open up space for Messi, and if he’s available at a knockdown price, so much the better. Come the new year, Inter might want to make some phone calls to see if Chucky’s relations with SDFC have really deteriorated beyond repair. He’ll want to be fit and firing ahead of Mexico’s World Cup hosting gig, and having Messi beside him might very well help with that.
