Ever since Ruben Amorim officially took the reins at Manchester United in November, fans have been pleading with the club that he uses his ties to hash out a deal for ex-frontman Viktor Gyokeres.

Unfortunately for them, the head coach did rule out a mid-season move for Gyokeres out of respect for his former club. That, coupled with the fact United do not have the funds for any big-name arrivals in January, means supporters will have to wait until the summer to hopefully see a transfer come to fruition.

If the Swede’s prolific form continues for the remainder of the campaign, he’ll undoubtedly be one of the hottest targets in Europe for a host of top clubs in 2025. Already this season, he’s notched an unprecedented 26 goals and five assists in 24 matches. Five of those goals came in his six Champions League appearances alone, which included a hat-trick in Sporting’s 4-1 win over Manchester City in November – Amorim’s final home game at the club.

Gyokeres, 26, has garnered experience at the likes of St. Pauli, Swansea City and Coventry City before penning a five-year deal at the Jose Alvalade Stadium in 2023. With no disrespect to Sporting, you couldn’t blame him if he was now eyeing a switch to one of the top-five leagues, where he can only further cement his status as a world-class forward.

Gyokeres sets transfer aim amid ‘concrete’ United interest

On December 2, Florian Plettenberg relayed an update that was music to the Old Trafford faithful’s ears when he revealed that ‘concrete talks’ had taken place between the Red Devils and Gyokeres, adding that any potential pursuit would require sales first.

When addressing his future in a recent interview, the sought-after star said, as per the Metro: “We will see. There are many rumours circulating, but we are in the middle of the season, and there are still many months left.

“We will see when the time comes what will happen.”

Then, when further pressed on where he’d like to be playing at 30 years old, he responded: “Playing for one of the best teams in Europe. That is the objective.”
