Clubs have been caught off-guard by a gigantic offer to a player. Liverpool's transfer landscape has been transformed.
It's January and that means the transfer window is off and running. Though, the winter window does have that extra bite to it as players enter the final six months of their contracts.
Ibrahima Konate is one of those, of course. His deal will expire at the end of the campaign and he's currently free to discuss terms with non-English clubs.
In fact, he can agree a pre-contract if he wishes. Liverpool have lost sole-negotiating rights and may lose their player without a transfer fee.
But Konate is far from the only player in this situation. He's actually one of three major centre-backs in a similar story and the battle to sign them is heating up.
Now a mega-offer threatens to transform everything.
Reports are breaking that Bayern Munich are on the verge of renewing Dayot Upamecano’s contract. This would be a coup for the Germans - Upamecano is arguably the most in-demand centre-back on the market right now.
Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain are both interested. Liverpool have been heavily linked, too. Now it seems he’s going to remain with Bayern.
And that isn’t a surprise if Fabrice Hawkins is right about the offer. He claims there’s a €20m-per-year deal on the table for Upamecano, which comes out at about €384k per week.
It’s a figure that appears to have caught Real Madrid and PSG off-guard. Neither will match it and thus Upamencano is destined to remain with Bayern.
