Gus Hamer is facing an uncertain future at Sheffield United after entering the final 18 months of his contract at Bramall Lane.

The attacking midfielder has been outstanding for the Blades since he arrived from Coventry in the summer of 2023, but failure to win promotion last season meant there was plenty of speculation surrounding Hamer.

However, to their credit, Sheffield United managed to retain Hamer in the past two windows, and it’s something they will hope pays off, as they still have a chance of reaching the play-offs.

Hamer, mind you, may just be looking on with a touch of envy at former club Coventry, who are appearing increasingly poised to return to the Premier League automatically under Frank Lampard.

Yet, failure to go up is going to put the Yorkshire outfit in a difficult position, as Hamer will be in the final year of his deal, and, in truth, an exit feels inevitable.

FLW has been told a return to Coventry could work if the Sky Blues are able to offer Premier League football, especially as it has been claimed previously Hamer could be available for as little as £6m.

The prospect of returning to Coventry would surely appeal to the player, and here we explain FIVE reasons why Hamer should push for this to happen if it’s a possibility…

5 ? ? He is a popular figure at Coventry and knows the club

Hamer had three years at Coventry, where he was excellent, although the club couldn’t take that next step to reach the Premier League after losing the play-off final to Luton.

So, he had to leave for the sake of his career at the time, but Hamer’s effort and quality over the years was appreciated by all at Coventry.

That feeling was mutual, and Hamer has made no secret that he has a lot of gratitude and love for Coventry, so the chance to return is something he would jump at. He knows he is popular, the fans would take to him, and he could settle in quickly.

4 ? ? He could flourish in Frank Lampard’s tactical setup

Perhaps most importantly, you could see Hamer slotting into this Coventry side easily.

Lampard is happy to mix things up as a head coach, but he primarily wants his team to play attacking, front foot football, and that suits Hamer.

Plus, Hamer may be lacking athleticism and genuine speed, but he would have several players around him at Coventry that can make up for that.

Frank Onyeka is brilliant at covering the ground defensively, and crucially, going forward, Haji Wright can stretch the opposition and his running power and work-rate will create space and time for Hamer to excel.

3 ? ? He can get even better around higher quality players

Following on from that, you get the sense that Hamer is sometimes too good for the Championship in terms of his football brain and his technical ability.

He is capable of playing passes that others don’t see, and sometimes his teammates at Sheffield United aren’t on the same wavelength.

If he joined Coventry in the Premier League, he would be surrounding himself with players of a similar calibre, and it could be exactly what he needs to get back to his very best on a consistent basis.

2 ? ? He has Premier League experience

From Coventry’s perspective, they will need to add players who have played in the Premier League if they do win promotion.

Whilst Hamer’s year in the top flight was ultimately disappointing as the Blades were relegated, there’s no doubt he will have benefited from that experience.

He will be able to pass that knowledge and know-how onto his new teammates, and Lampard will recognise how important it is to get players who understand what is waiting for Coventry, as they will need to hit the ground running in the Premier League.

1 ? ? It suits all parties financially

Finally, this is a deal that could suit all parties from a financial perspective, which is obviously important.

As outlined above, Hamer’s contract will quickly become a problem for the Blades, so they will see this as an opportunity to get a fee for a prized asset, as opposed to losing him on a free transfer 12 months down the line.

But, that contract situation should ensure that Coventry can pick Hamer up for a relative bargain, and if it is anything like £6m, most would agree it’s a steal.

Furthermore, Hamer is likely to get a pay rise if he does join Coventry in the Premier League, so it’s a rare transfer that could benefit all involved.
