Three weeks after Vinicius Junior declared that Spain must continue to make progress with its handling of racism, the ‘Anti-Violence Commission’, which handles incidents of discrimination in sport, have recommended an unprecedented fine for abuse on social media.

Classified as ‘very serious’ by the commission, a series of racist insults from an individual have been transferred to the public prosecutor as evidence. As per Relevo, the Anti-Violence Commission have recommended that they be given a €60k fine and banned from sporting events for two years.

This follows on from last season when the first prison sentence was handed out to three Valencia fans, who abused Vinicius at Mestalla in May of 2023. It of course remains to be seen if the prosecutor goes ahead with that sentence, but the punishments are trending towards a much more severe handling of racism.

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti told the press on Monday that the insults towards Vinicius, racist or not, were intolerable, while teammate Dani Carvajal also sympathised with his battle, saying his reactions to the crowd were normal.
