Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has just responded to some criticism from former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher.

As you will all know by now, Carragher has been a pundit for Sky Sports for many years now since retiring from the game. And lately he has often been found criticising Chelsea under the new ownership.

His latest criticism though, which we have already reported on this morning, was aimed at Chelsea’s owners once again rather than anything towards Enzo Maresca and in fact, he actually complimented Maresca.

Carragher said:

“I think some Chelsea fans think I’ve got it in for them but I think the manager has actually done a brilliant job since he’s come In.

“My criticism with Chelsea is that the 3 and a half years the owners have been there and they have that team, we’re sat here saying they’ve got no chance for the league and Chelsea fans know that too.

“My big problem with Chelsea is not to do with Maresca as such, it’s the 3 and a half years with the money that’s been spent and you turn up at Old Trafford with that goalkeeper and those centre backs.”

Enzo Maresca’s post match press conference.

In his pre-match press conference for the League Cup this week, Maresca was specifically asked about these comments.

In quotes picked up by SPTC, he replied:

“I think, as I’ve said many times, anyone can say what they decide to say. It’s not a problem. I think we improved a lot last season. For instance, if you see the last three or four tables in the last three or four years, we closed the gap with the first one, two or three. For me, this season, the main target is to continue to improve players, continue to improve the team and try to close that gap. This is, for me, the main focus for this season.”

Rooney also offered some critique

Wayne Rooney, who was reviewing the game on Match of the Day at the weekend, did offer some critique towards the direction of Enzo Maresca though.

He said:

“They had no imagination on the pitch, did they? I felt that’s what was missing for Chelsea.

“They had a lot of possession side-to-side in the second half but they missed that creativity which, of course, Cole Palmer and [Pedro] Neto bring them so, I think the change was strange but thankfully, it helped [Man] United.”
