One player who has consistently been named as a transfer target for Manchester City is Real Madrid winger Rodrygo. The Brazilian international would add quality to Manchester City’s wide options, but it has always seemed to be a question of where he would fit into Pep Guardiola’s squad. In a squad that contains Jeremy Doku and Omar Marmoush as options on the left wing, and Phil Foden, Oscar Bobb and Rayan Cherki who could all play on the right wing there doesn’t appear to be any room for the Real Madrid winger in Pep Guardiola’s squad.
Now a new report indicates that Rodrygo wants to move to Manchester City. But once again, it seems to be a problem of where the Brazilian international would fit into the City squad. That would appear to be an even bigger issue given the current size of the Manchester City squad.
Ruairidh Barlow has relayed a report from Spanish publication Cadena SER for Football Espana that Rodrygo is interested in a move to Manchester City. Furthermore, Barlow reports that Arsenal have an interest in signing the Brazilian international. Furthermore, Barlow reports that Pep Guardiola is an admirer of the Real Madrid winger. Lastly, Barlow reports that Real Madrid would demand at least €90 million to sell Rodrygo this summer.
Firstly, as mentioned above, the Manchester City squad is packed with options for both wings. If Rodrygo were to arrive at the Etihad he’d face competition for a spot in the City starting eleven. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it’s hard to see Rodrygo moving to the Etihad to be a squad player. Given his pedigree as a player, he’d want to be a guaranteed starter wherever he goes if he leaves Real Madrid. Perhaps that isn’t something City could offer him as of right now. There is an argument to be made that if Jack Grealish leaves City as expected, they will need to sign another winger. But is an expensive move for Rodrygo, the avenue Manchester City would pursue? I’m not so sure as of right now.
The other issue is whether Manchester City will sign any more players while they have such a large squad? Players will have to leave Manchester City this summer. That is a given. Who those players could be outside of the obvious alternatives isn’t immediately clear. It would seem that City will have to sell players before making any further signings. That fact may scupper any chance of Rodrygo signing for Manchester City this summer.
The Rodrygo to Manchester City story may fester away all summer. But the more you look at, the less likely it seems that the Real Madrid winger will arrive at the Etihad. So while Rodrygo may fancy a move to the Etihad, there just doesn’t seem to be room for him in Pep Guardiola’s squad.
