It was expected that Manchester City would take a young squad on their upcoming preseason tour of Asia. In total, there were 19 players from the FA Cup and Carabao Cup holders who participated in the recently concluded World Cup. Due to this, all of the players who featured in the latter stages of the competition are currently enjoying a well-deserved period of rest and recuperation. However, it has now been reported that Enzo Maresca could have a stronger than expected squad to utilize in Asia. That should aid Maresca in his quest to implement his tactical tweaks ahead of the 2026-27 season.
Sam Lee has provided an update for The Athletic on what the make up of the Manchester City squad for their preseason tour of Asia could look like. Lee reports that the City players who represented Spain, France, Norway and England will not participate in City’s trip to Asia. This means that Rodri, Rayan Cherki, Erling Haaland, Elliot Anderson, Nico O’Reilly, Marc Guehi, and James Trafford will not be on the plane to Hong Kong.
Furthermore, Sam Lee reports that it is expected that Antoine Semenyo, Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol will travel with their teammates. Rayan Ait-Nouri Tijjani Reijnders and Omar are all also expected to be in Manchester City’s travelling squad. All told, Enzo Maresca will have a quality selection of players to choose from in Asia. Phil Foden Gianluigi Donnarumma, Rico Lewis, Savinho and Nico Gonzalez all returned to Manchester City last week their participation in City’s tour of Asia is a given.
A major benefit of Enzo Maresca having a stronger-than-expected squad to work with during his team’s preseason tour is that it gives him an opportunity to work with a larger group of players who will be integral to his 2026-27 plans. This way, Maresca can get a quicker-than-expected look at how his tactical ideas and philosophies work with his new squad. Also, with more experienced players involved in City’s tour of Asia, it could accelerate the period of adaptation needed for the City players to adjust to Maresca’s demands. That can only be a positive for Maresca and his team.
Manchester City look set to take a stronger-than-expected squad on their preseason tour of Asia. If this proves to be the case it can only aid Manchester City’s preparations for the 2026-27 season.
