Football League World exclusively revealed that Bolton Wanderers had joined the race for Sam Dalby's signature - with the striker set to become a free agent when his Wrexham contract expires at the end of June.

The 25-year-old - who stands at a towering 6ft 3in - scored 15 goals in 35 Scottish Premiership appearances for Dundee United this past season, and also rejected a contract extension with his parent club.

Our Trotters Fan Pundit, Liam O'Meara, expressed to FLW his strong support for the club's pursuit of Dalby - saying the striker fits the profile Bolton desperately need.

"It’s exactly the kind of profile player that we want - a big, strong number nine and his record for Dundee United is very encouraging, but it’s almost that type of position that you don’t necessarily purely based on goal contributions - they contribute in other ways, they take up defenders, they gage the ball, they allow you to get up the pitch," O'Meara explained.

"For me, it’s exactly the kind of profile that we need. We don’t have another striker like that - particularly with Adeboyejo being injured until January.

"So, for me, it’s a winner. I’m not sure his record at Wrexham will endear him too much to the fans who will look purely at goal stats, but I think Bolton need to look at some of the more influential, big number nines they’ve had in the past and think of the profile of player and how that helps the team generally.

"The kind of player we should be going for."

Sam Dalby's turn-around in Scotland provides encouragement

There's no understating the transformation Dalby had during his loan spell at Dundee United. Not only did the striker score 15 goals in the league, but he was also named their Player of the Season.

His performances were so impressive that he earned a spot in the PFA Scotland Premiership Team of the Year - becoming one of two players outside of Celtic and Rangers to get included.

Bolton face stiff competition for Dalby's signature though, with a number of teams including Wigan Athletic - Blackpool manager Steve Bruce was reportedly spotted watching him during matches - and Dundee United themselves are expected to table a contract offer to retain him.

If Wanderers were to secure the services of Dalby, it would address an apparent need in their squad for a big striker - with someone who has proven he can perform at a higher level when given the opportunity.
