Abel Ferreira eyes historic feats with Palmeiras in Libertadores

The Palmeiras reaches its third Libertadores final under the command of Abel Ferreira. Champion in 2020 and 2021, the coach aims to achieve historic milestones if he wins against Flamengo this Saturday (29), in Lima, Peru.

With ten titles since he was announced at Verdão in October 2020, Abel could stand alone as the coach with the most achievements for the club. Currently, he is tied with Oswaldo Brandão.

If he wins the title this year, he will equal Osvaldo Zubeldía, the Argentine commander of the legendary Estudiantes three-peat between 1968 and 1970, as the second coach with the most titles in the competition's history. Above him, only the Argentine: Carlos Bianchi, champion with Vélez Sarsfield in 1994 and with Boca Juniors in 2000, 2001, and 2003. Abel could also match Bianchi's feat of winning three titles with the same team.

Abel at ease

Despite the statistics surrounding the game, Abel Ferreira appeared calm. This Friday (28), the day's attention turned to the coach, who held a press conference. He spoke about the troubled moment for Verdão, which hasn't won in five games, and assured that the situation won't affect the decision on the field.

– There are two completely different competitions. One is the Brazilian league, the other is the Libertadores. A loss, a draw, 10 wins, 30 goals scored. We reached the final with merit, consistency, talent, and a lot of effort.

Abel also talked about the anxiety and expectations surrounding the game. Calm and composed, he said he will sleep with a clear mind and will give his best, as will the players, during the 90 minutes.

– Tomorrow, from the first to the last second, we will give our best with focus and clarity to secure another title not only for the fans but, if I may, for ourselves for everything this year has been. We want, deserve, and can achieve it!

– Rest assured that tonight I will sleep peacefully because I have a clear conscience that I did everything, absolutely everything I could to prepare my players. I work to serve others, to give my best to help others. It is my main mission as a coach.
