According to Globo.com, the Superior Tribunal de Justiça Desportiva has suspended Palmeiras head coach Abel Ferreira for eight matches following two separate dismissals, with Thursday’s ruling open to appeal.

Six matches stem from his red card in the clássico against São Paulo, and a further two follow his sending-off versus Fluminense. Both incidents occurred in the Campeonato Brasileiro.

Abel has already served two matches automatically, so if the decision stands he will be sidelined for six more.

He was charged under article 258 of the CBJD in both cases for acting contrary to sporting ethics. After the São Paulo match, referee Anderson Daronco wrote in his report that the coach called him “cagão”. Prosecutors also submitted a clip voiced by an actor that purported to show him insulting the officiating further, which drew protests from the defence.

Auditors opted for an exemplary penalty, citing repeated breaches of protocol. Case rapporteur Ana Ralil said the behaviour was not isolated, was continuous, and came with offensive language and a hostile stance, including after the disciplinary sanction.

Palmeiras are preparing an appeal and will seek a suspensive effect so Abel can remain on the bench while the case awaits a second-instance hearing.
