Bayern Munich sporting director Christoph Freund insists Mathys Tel could end up staying at the Allianz Arena despite Manchester United’s vigorous attempts to sign him.

This transfer saga has been dominating the headlines in recent days. It all began when the 19-year-old asked to leave the Bundesliga giants due to his lack of playing time, as he continues to act as Harry Kane’s understudy.

The Frenchman’s plea sent shockwaves throughout the English shores, with a host of top Premier League clubs vying for his signature, including Tottenham who were said to be very close to sealing the deal.

Nevertheless, there have been several turnarounds in recent hours. First, it was said that the player has agreed to stay at Bayern until the end of the season. However, later reports claimed that Man United have relaunched a new onslaught, making a ‘verbal offer’ for the teenager who was dropped from Saturday’s matchday squad.

For his part, Freund offered a vague response when asked about Tel’s future. He revealed that the striker still has a good chance of staying at the club, which implies a departure could be on the cards.

“That is absolutely realistic,” said the Bayern sporting director in his interview with Sky Sport Germany when asked about the possibility of the youngsters’s stay.

“Mathys is extremely connected to the club. He loves being here. It’s quite possible that he will still be a Bayern Munich player on Tuesday.”

So while Freund isn’t exactly sure if his player will stay or leave, German journalist Florian Plettenberg reveals that Man United prefer to replace Aston Villa-bound Marcus Rashford with a more experienced profile.

Moreover, Bayern would rather cash in on Tel rather than send him out on loan to Old Trafford.
