John Percy and David Ornstein have the latest as Wolverhampton Wanderers make transfer offers for Middlesbrough target Adam Armstrong of Southampton.
Wolves look to be closing in on agreeing a deal with Southampton for striker Adam Armstrong - and Middlesbrough could be missing out.
Since the start of 2019/20, Armstrong is almost without peer at Championship level in terms of goalscoring. The 28-year-old has 91 goals and 37 assists in 277 games at this level.
Of those 91, 79 have come since 2019 for the likes of Blackburn Rovers, Southampton, and West Brom. That is without mentioning his three goals in three Championship play-off matches, including the winner against Leeds United at Wembley in the 2024 final for the Saints.
He has been an absolute goal machine, which is why there is always interest in his services from ambitious teams. That said, he has struggled to make the step up, with Armstrong notching just six goals and seven assists in 88 Premier League games.
Given that Armstrong is 29 this month and in the final 18 months of his deal, he's potentially heading towards his last opportunity at the top flight or his last big contract in his career. It leaves both Armstrong and Southampton with a decision to make - one which is likely to be resolved very soon.

Wrexham have been linked with Armstrong in a £15 million switch, while Middlesbrough are also lurking around Armstrong. It was difficult to envisage Southampton sanctioning a sale without a replacement lined up - but it looks like it could be happening.
Rangers want Archer from Southampton but there remains serious interest in Armstrong ahead of the transfer deadline tomorrow, and it comes from Premier League strugglers Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Per Alex Crook of talkSPORT, Rob Edwards' side had a bid rejected overnight for Armstrong, but in a fresh update John Percy of The Telegraph revealed a £7 million bid with £2 million of add-ons has been made by Wolves to sign the Championship bagsman.
The latest comes via David Ornstein, with The Athletic's transfer guru revealing that the £9 million total bid is now anticipated to be accepted by Southampton ahead of the February 2 deadline, with current Wolves striker Jorgen Strand Larsen heading to Crystal Palace in a bumper deal.

With Wolves on eight points and 17 adrift of safety, it makes sense for them to begin planning for the Championship and to sign players now to bed them in and save time and work in the summer.
Armstrong is a known commodity who guarantees a regular stream of goals in the second tier, even if he has struggled to ever find consistent form a league up.
Wolves are not concerned by that, with an immediate return in the short-term likely to be their primary focus over making every signing someone who could be a Premier League player in 2027/28.
It does put Southampton at risk in the Championship, with goals and output needed to ensure they can make the play-offs this season. That appears less likely if Armstrong isn't in the building, and surely a replacement will be sourced.
