Spain’s players’ union AFE has asked UEFA and CONMEBOL to move the 27 March Finalissima against Argentina from Lusail Stadium in Qatar, citing security, and has opposed playing while the Middle East escalation continues.

UEFA confirmed on Thursday that no alternative venue is being considered for now, and said it will monitor the situation through late next week before making a final decision.

AFE, the main representative of professional players in Spain, urged that the fixture should not be staged in or near a conflict zone to avoid risking players’ safety.

The union outlined logistical and security risks, warning that many locations could be targeted by missiles and that airspace might close without notice, potentially leaving squads in a difficult situation.

It also framed the issue in political and humanitarian terms, arguing that staging sport in tense areas clashes with government evacuations of civilians.

Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente has previously suggested that, if playing in Qatar is not feasible, an alternative venue should be sought where possible, reflecting the direction of ongoing talks.
