After knockout, Gustavo Henrique reflects on Corinthians' Paulistão defeat

On Saturday night, at 8:30 PM (Brasília time), Corinthians visited Novorizontino at the Jorge Ismael de Biasi Stadium, known as Jorjão, in a match valid for the semifinals of the 2026 Campeonato Paulista. The result was 1-0 for the home team. The only goal of the match was scored by Mayk in the 74th minute. With the 1-0 result for Novorizontino, Corinthians was eliminated from the competition.

In an interview with the press as he left the field, defender Gustavo Henrique assessed the team's performance and commented on the difficulty in creating offensive plays.“We knew that they had practically had a perfect campaign at home. I think they won all their matches. We knew we would keep possession and they would play on the counterattack. We couldn't create many goal chances. The chances we did create, we couldn't finish. This is something we have to learn from for the rest of the year, it's the beginning of the year and we have to learn from our mistakes,” said Gustavo.

The defender also spoke about what the team lacked in matches where they had more possession.

“I think their team was very well organized, both to press and in a low block. I think we lacked a bit more creativity. We couldn't break into the opponent's area very often. Many times we had a very high line and often we couldn't attack the space, which was the main factor to push their team back, so they wouldn't stay so compact. It's hard to talk right now, I apologize to our fans, thank those who came, those who were at home, but now we have to keep working. There are many games ahead,” he added.

Finally, Gustavo Henrique commented on the context of the team as the current champions of the Paulistão, Copa do Brasil, and Supercopa.

“No favoritism at all. I think you saw their team here at home. They're very competitive, they close up the whole game and go after the ball, today was no different. We were doing well in the game, unfortunately with one quick play they managed to score, and after that we couldn't create any more chances. Football is like this, it's a learning process for us so we can keep going this year. The year is very long and we still have a lot to achieve,” he concluded.

After facing Novorizontino, Corinthians will only return to the field on the next 11th, Wednesday, for the Campeonato Brasileiro, against Coritiba, in the fifth round of the national tournament, at 9:30 PM (Brasília time).
