PSV Eindhoven's Ismael Saibari is set to join Vincent Kompany's FC Bayern for the 2026/27 season. The Moroccan international, who already scored at this year's World Cup in the game against Brazil, will cost the Bavarians somewhere around €50 million - a heavy sum!
Should Saibari make that step, he would become the 4th Moroccan player to ever put on a Bayern Munich shirt. The three players before him experienced very different things - here are their journeys in chronological order.
The first ever Moroccan to play for FC Bayern is Medhi Benatia. The centre-back came into one of Bayern's most prolific eras and fulfilled a similar role to Minjae Kim nowadays.
Benatia's transfer from Roma to Bayern cost them €28 million, but Benatia would have a hard time getting past Jerome Boateng, David Alaba, Javi Martínez and Dante. The now 39-year-old made 46 appearances (3 goals) for the Rekordmeister before moving on to Juventus for almost €20 million in total.
He was supposed to be the solution to Bayern's fullback positions: Noussair Mazraoui. However, especially injuries stopped him from ever cementing his place in Bayern's starting eleven.
Mazraoui showed his class at Ajax Amsterdam, where he had the potential to become one of Europe's best fullbacks - funnily enough, in a similar time span as PSG's Achraf Hakimi.
At Bayern, where the now 28-year-old played 55 games, his dreams never came through. He was one of Bayern's superstar signings in 2022, right next to Ryan Gravenberch and Sadio Mané - Bayern didn't even have to pay a fee to bring him in. In the end, though, Mazraoui couldn't find a way past the likes of Benjamin Pavard and Alphonso Davies and moved to Manchester United for €15 million.
He came in with a lot of hype and promises - but left next to no mark in the end. Adam Aznou was one of Europe's most highly rated leftback-talents when he decided to leave Barcelona's La Masia to join Bayern Munich's academy - all in the hopes of more and quicker game time for the first team.
While his friends, including a certain Lamine Yamal, broke through in Barcelona, Aznou was “stuck” in Bayern's youth teams. The now only 20-year-old did not have the patience to wait for his moment in Munich and after just four games for the Bavarians, he decided to try his luck in England for Everton just last year.
So far, this move has not proved to be the right one: Aznou only played one game for the senior team, while talents like Lennart Karl were helped to make the final step into the first team in Munich. Luck doesn't seem to be on Aznou's side so far.
