ChatGPT has touted Oxford United as the next destination for Wayne Rooney.
Wayne Rooney has been tipped for a return to management in League Two since his departure from Plymouth Argyle earlier in the season.
The former Manchester United striker has endured a tough time in his management career, following a solid stint at Derby County in his first ever role. Moves to Birmingham City and Plymouth have been unsuccessful, which has left his career slightly in limbo.
Recently, pundit and former England international Carlton Palmer spoke exclusively to Football League World, and tipped the former Argyle boss to make a return to the dugout in League Two in the near future, citing a need to go and prove himself before getting a big job.
We explored three potential opportunities in the fourth tier that Rooney should consider, and have now put the question to ChatGPT as to where the Englishman's next destination might be. What the AI said may just shock you.
Despite being tipped for a League Two job, ChatGPT believes that Rooney will remain in the Championship for his next job, and that job is being Gary Rowett's successor at Oxford United.
The 51-year-old was appointed in December, and has guided the U's away from the relegation zone. However, the AI believes that Rowett won't last at the Kassam Stadium, with the job at Oxford being touted as the perfect next move for Rooney.
This seems rather bizarre on paper, as the 39-year-old was sacked from a club lower down the Championship earlier in the season. Rooney doesn't exactly have the greatest of track records in the second tier, and taking over a club like Oxford which could be threatened by the drop seems like a bad move by all parties.
Despite his poor Championship record, the program believes that the U's have plenty of criteria that would make Rooney a great fit for the role.
The AI considered numerous factors when picking the next perfect role for the former Birmingham boss. One of these takes into account the work he did at Derby with younger players, as ChatGPT thinks Oxford would provide a similar environment to the one at Pride Park, where he enjoyed his best years as a manager.
Another reason outlined was the need for stability behind the scenes. All three English clubs Rooney has previously taken charge of have had a lot going on behind the scenes, which certainly wouldn't have helped his case. The program suggested that Oxford offers a low-pressure, stable environment.
Whilst ChatGPT may think Oxford and Rooney are a match made in heaven, it's very hard to agree with the conclusion offered based on evidence on the pitch. United need stability and experience to remain in the Championship, which Rowett offers and Rooney doesn't.
It would be hard to see someone like Oxford hiring the former England international, as it presents a huge risk of unsettling that Championship stability they currently have. Whilst there are factors that could make it an attractive prospect, it's highly unlikely this move would happen in the near future.
