Ajax closing in on appointing new head coach from recently relegated Girona | OneFootball

ESPN are reporting that Ajax are closing in on appointing a new head coach. Oscar Garcia has been in charge for the past few months, but it was always understood that he was likely going to have to step away from the role in the summer, barring a miraculous end to the campaign. Given that Ajax scrapped into Europe with the final game of the season with a victory over Utrecht via a penalty shoot out, Garcia was never a viable candidate.

Instead, Ajax look set to appoint Michel from Girona. The Spanish head coach current contract with the La Liga side will expire next month, meaning Ajax can save on having to buy out any other candidates. Remarkably, Ajax are opting for a head coach who just suffered relegation from the top flight of Spanish football, two years after Girona made it to the Champions League. Michel had been linked with a move to Bayer Leverkusen, but the Bundesliga club is said to have pulled out, paving the way for Ajax to sign the Spaniard.

Ajax fans will hope that Michel has learnt the lessons from relegation this past season and will instead bring success like he experienced at Girona a few seasons ago.
