Ajax loan transfer ruled out for Manchester City midfielder

The path towards a loan switch to Eredivisie giants Ajax appears to have now faded for Manchester City’s Sverre Nypan this summer, according to reports.

The 18-year-old Norwegian midfielder joined City from Rosenborg earlier this summer and is widely viewed as one of Europe’s top teenage talents, tracked intensely by the likes of Arsenal and Aston Villa earlier in the year.

City moved quickly to secure his services amid the strong competition, but the intention from the outset has been to loan the player out for regular first-team football in the 2025/26 campaign – a plan agreed upon by the midfielder and his representatives during talks.

Nypan is regarded internally at Manchester City as a long-term project, and his development will be carefully managed to ensure a smooth progression into the top levels of European football.

Sverre Nypan’s move to Manchester was seen as a significant coup for the club’s scouting and recruitment department, especially given his first-team experience in Norway and interest from clubs across the continent. But with fierce competition for midfield roles under Pep Guardiola at present, a loan will ensure valuable continued playing time at senior level.

Earlier reports had linked Nypan with Ajax, who were believed to be among the frontrunners to secure a temporary deal. The Eredivisie club have a strong reputation for developing young midfielders and were thought to offer an ideal tactical environment.

However, the latest update suggests that such a move is now off the table, with Manchester City officials considering alternative destinations that align with their performance expectations and player development strategy.

That is according to a new report from The Athletic’s Jordan Campbell, who insists that while Sverre Nypan will leave City on loan this summer as part of an agreed development plan for the teenage midfielder, a prospective move to Ajax is thought to no longer be on the cards.

This update also follows earlier reports suggesting Nypan could form part of a trio of young City players heading out on loan this summer, alongside Claudio Echeverri and Vitor Reis. With the former now at the centre of talk involving Girona, and Reis edging closer to the same side, Nypan’s own path is expected to become clearer in the coming days.

City are currently prioritising clubs who can offer a high level of weekly competition, developmental feedback, and alignment with the club’s tactical vision. Whether that results in another CFG-linked loan move – as with Girona – or an external European side remains to be seen, with clubs in Belgium, France, and Germany monitoring the situation.

With pre-season now underway and final squad decisions looming, clarity over Nypan’s immediate future is likely to arrive soon. What is clear, however, is that City remain committed to giving the midfielder a clear pathway to eventual first-team involvement.
