Akanji and Switzerland head into the Round of 16 | OneFootball

Switzerland's World Cup journey continues, with Manuel Akanji helping his side secure a 2-0 victory over Algeria at BC Place in Vancouver to book a place in the Round of 16, in which Switzerland will face the winners of the tie between Colombia and Ghana.

Akanji completed another full 90 minutes, maintaining his ever-present record at the tournament while once again marshalling a composed and disciplined Swiss defence. Switzerland made the perfect start, taking the lead after just 10 minutes. A superb solo run from Manzambi carved open the Algerian back line before the Freiburg forward squared for Embolo, who had the simple task of converting from close range. The Swiss doubled their advantage just 47 seconds into the second half. After Zakaria's cross was only partially cleared, Ndoye reacted quickest inside the penalty area and drilled a low right-footed finish beyond Zidane. From there, Switzerland managed the contest comfortably, limiting Algeria's opportunities while going close on several occasions to adding a third goal.

Switzerland will return to action in the Round of 16 on Tuesday 7 July, with kick-off scheduled for 22:00 CEST.
