Al Ahly have suffered a huge blow in their hunt for a new head coach to lead the team after parting ways with Spanish mentor Jose Riveiro last month.
The former Orlando Pirates boss lasted three months on the job, winning just one of the seven matches he oversaw in the Red Devils’ dugout.
Riveiro’s sacking came after he had a tumultuous start in the Egyptian Premier League, where he won once, drew twice and lost one match, leaving the club in an unfamiliar 12th place on the table.
The final nail to the coffin was delivered by reigning African champions Pyramids FC, whose 2-0 win over Ahly in the last outing sealed Riveiro’s fate in Cairo.
Ex-Zamalek tactician Jose Gomes has been linked with the vacant hotseat since July and reports about Ahly’s interest have resurfaced.
The Portuguese gaffer is currently in charge of Saudi Pro League side Al Fateh, who are said to be determined to hold on to their coach.
Moreover, Gomes is reportedly keen to continue his project in the oil-rich kingdom and is believed to have informed Ahly of his desire to honor his contract.
It remains to be seen whether the club of the century will convince Gomes to return to Cairo or move on to other targets.
