According to Sunderland Echo, on-loan Sunderland midfielder Alan Browne returned to Middlesbrough training today after a dramatic 24 hours for the club.
Southampton have been expelled from the Championship play-offs, with Boro reinstated and currently set to face Hull City at Wembley on Saturday.
An independent commission ruled after Southampton admitted observing opponents’ training on three occasions this season, including Middlesbrough earlier this month. The decision denies Saints a shot at Premier League promotion, valued at least £200 million, unless an appeal due to be heard on Wednesday succeeds.
The case began on 7 May when Boro reported a Saints staff member had viewed their training two days before the semi-final first leg at the Riverside, and charges followed the next day. On Tuesday, it was confirmed that further charges were laid on Sunday, 17 May, with Southampton admitting they had also watched sessions held by Oxford in December and Ipswich in April.
As things stand, the final is scheduled for 3.30pm on Saturday, although the date and line-up remain subject to change pending the appeal. Middlesbrough are now focused on their game against Hull City at Wembley.
Browne, 31, has made 43 appearances and scored four goals during an impressive season-long loan at Boro.
