Alan Shearer has backed Sunderland and called Chelsea’s reported bid for Granit Xhaka “embarrassing”.

“Sunderland bought Granit Xhaka for £17m and he was one of the best players in this Premier League last season. And Chelsea think they can come in and offer less than half of what they bought him for and think that’s acceptable?” he told The Metro.

“I mean, that’s bizarre to me. It’s embarrassing from Chelsea, really. I mean, it’s ridiculous.”

Xhaka, Sunderland’s captain, joined from Bayer Leverkusen last summer for £17m and is under contract until 2028.

The midfielder has been the focus of heavy transfer speculation in recent days, though the Black Cats are under no pressure to sell.
