It was a comfortable 3-0 victory in the end for Carlos Corberán’s Baggies and, with Norwich City losing at Birmingham City, they finished in fifth place and will play Southampton in the play-off semi-final with the first leg at the Hawthorns next Sunday.

It is only the fifth time that Albion have finished in fifth place in any division and the first since the 1958/59 campaign which was Vic Buckingham’s last season as Baggies boss. Only once before have they finished fifth in the second tier which was back in 1907/08.

Alex Mowatt took his first penalty in an Albion shirt and scored. It was only his third penalty of his professional career and he had a 50% record before this match, missing his first when playing for Oxford United in a 3-0 defeat to Portsmouth in March 2018 and then scoring for Barnsley in a 1-1 draw against Reading in April 2021. It was Albion’s fifth penalty of the season and all have been scored with John Swift scoring three and Brandon Thomas-Asante the other.

The second goal was Kyle Bartley’s 14th for the Baggies and he will make his 200th appearance for the club in his next match, presumably next Sunday. The third was Darnell Furlong’s 10th goal for Albion and will also make his 200th appearance in his next game.
