Sunderland’s assistant head coach Alessandro Barcherini struck a measured tone after the Tyne-Wear derby win at Newcastle, the coach said in a post that attention quickly turns back to the work behind the scenes.

Anthony Gordon put the hosts in front early at St James’s Park. Chemsdine Talbi equalised before Brian Brobbey struck a 90th-minute winner to complete the comeback and secure a first league double over Newcastle since 2014-15.

His message was that people notice results but rarely the graft that underpins them. Preparation is geared to winning and any initial joy fades quickly, replaced by relief and planning for the next game.

There was emphasis on loving to win while finding joy in the work, a standard he asks of his players. Supporters were urged to savour the moment, then it was back to work.

Newcastle remain without a home league win in this fixture since 2010 and are winless in league meetings anywhere since 2011.

Brobbey’s late strike also moved Sunderland ahead of their rivals in the all-time Tyne-Wear derby wins and lifted the Black Cats above Newcastle in the Premier League table, a run that continues to tilt momentum their way.
