Liverpool have appointed Andoni Iraola on a two-year deal.

Iraola impressed the Reds with his work at Bournemouth, where he broke the club’s Premier League points record in his first season.

He broke it again in the next two seasons and guided them to the Europa League for the first time.

Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes worked with him on the south coast, and his track record of developing players made him a stadnout candidate.

England youth international and Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott said (via the Daily Mail): “He is a great manager.

“You see what we have done as a club and how we have progressed over the three seasons he was with us.

“The way we press out of possession is very aggressive, similar to the early (Jurgen) Klopp teams at Liverpool, that fierce aggressiveness and pressing with the wingers.

“Liverpool fans should definitely be so excited. It is a bigger club, but there is no reason why he can’t go in there and be a top manager and take them back to the level they were at.”

Iraola’s high-intensity pressing, vertical attacking football and willingness to trust young players align closely with the identity that brought the club so much success under Klopp.

He has consistently improved teams and players throughout his managerial career. However, succeeding at Liverpool is about more than implementing an attractive style of play.
