FLW's Huddersfield Town fan pundit shares their views on Alfie May's situation at the club

It's been a tricky season in League One for Huddersfield Town, who remain in strong contention for a top six finish this season despite frequently enduring tough patches of form.

Heading into this season, there was a huge degree of optimism surrounding the ACCU Stadium that Huddersfield could go on and fire themselves back to the Championship.

With Lee Grant being appointed to take the club forward, the Terriers made the additions of the likes of Jack Whatmough, Marcus Harness, Lynden Gooch, Ryan Ledson, and Joe Low, with their willingness to spend putting them amongst the favourites for the title.

Grant had previously been a coach at Ipswich Town under Kieran McKenna, and helped to oversee back-to-back promotions from the third tier to the Premier League, something Huddersfield supporters were hoping he could replicate.

However, things didn't go to plan, as Grant was dismissed and replaced by former Bristol City and Norwich City boss Liam Manning, who has recently been placed on compassionate leave by the club for personal reasons.

Prior to this, there was one player in particular whom he failed to get the best out of, with coaches Martin Drury and Jon Stead now tasked with doing what Manning couldn't, which could prove to be the difference between a play-off finish or not.

Alfie May has struggled at Huddersfield since his summer move from Birmingham City

As exclusively revealed by Football League World, Huddersfield completed a £1.2 million deal for Alfie May in the summer, joining from Birmingham City.

May had previously scored a staggering 82 goals in his last four seasons in League One for the likes of Cheltenham Town, Charlton Athletic, and Birmingham, and arrived at Huddersfield hoping to do similar.

However, things have yet to pan out that way, with the 32-year-old having netted just five goals and grabbed four assists from 30 league appearances this season, having struggled to adjust to life in West Yorkshire.

FLW's Huddersfield fan pundit, Graeme, has provided their thoughts on May's current situation in West Yorkshire, and whether they can see him moving on in the summer.

Graeme said: "It's been a difficult season for him."He's come in, he's not really been used to his strengths, and he hasn't really delivered on his potential, so it wouldn't surprise me if he were to move on in the summer, although it would mean someone coming in and paying a decent enough fee for him to make it worth our while."Of course, you know, we'd get the wage off the bill because I think he's our highest earner, or one of them."However, with the news about Liam Manning stepping down for the rest of the season and that leaving a question mark potentially over whether he'll be back or not, given the circumstances, it may well be that if a new manager comes in, then maybe they will want to keep him and use him."So I think the news that's coming out today will leave everything up in the air for a little bit until the dust settles, I think."

Alfie May could leave Huddersfield Town this summer, with both his and the club's future up in the air

At this point, there's a lot that hangs in the balance at Huddersfield.

The club could still achieve promotion back to the Championship next season, with it being unknown at this stage whether Manning will return to the dugout, and if not, whether the new boss would want May to stick around.

A lot still needs to fall into place, so at this stage, it's hard to predict what the future looks like for May.

In any instance, he will be just as disappointed as anyone will with his first season in West Yorkshire, having failed to hit the heights he has previously shown he is capable of doing in years gone by.

Due to turn 33 in the summer, the Englishman will have little resale value, as whoever is in charge will have a big decision to make regarding his future.
