Incoming Napoli head coach Massimiliano Allegri is reportedly determined to sign Lazio centre-back Mario Gila.
The Serie A managerial merry-go-round is currently in full swing, and the Livorno native has already accepted the Partenopei’s offer just days after getting sacked from AC Milan. During his time with the Rossoneri, the 58-year-old had reportedly requested the signing of Gila, who was also wanted by Igli Tare, who had brought the Spanish defender to Lazio in 2022.
However, Allegri and Tare have both been shown the door at the end of Milan’s disappointing campaign, which culminated in a late collapse and a failed Champions League bid. So, according to Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla, Allegri will take his appreciation for Gila with him to Napoli.
Interestingly, the Partenopei had already enquired about the 25-year-old, and the player’s agent, Alejandro Camano, had expressed his personal desire to see the Barcelona native playing at the Stadio Maradona. Napoli are thus expected to accelerate their attempts in the coming days. Pedulla also reveals enquiries from Juventus and Atletico Madrid, who are also interested in the Spaniard.
Although the player’s contract will expire next year, Lazio president Claudio Lotito is refusing to sell Gila for anything less than €30 million, as the player’s former employers, Real Madrid, are set to collect 50% of the transfer fee.
Moreover, the defender remains one of the lowest earners in the squad with a net salary of €1 million, so finding a competent replacement willing to accept the same wages will be a daunting task. Therefore, Lazio will only sell Gila if the circumstances are right.
