Birmingham City have been linked with the potential appointment of Thomas Frank as their next head coach

Birmingham City have been unable to sustain a promotion challenge this season under Chris Davies.

The Blues earned promotion to the Championship last year with a record 111 points as they clinched the League One title on their way back up.

The Midlands outfit were aiming to compete for a place in the Premier League, but their form in the second half of the campaign has led to them falling 12 points behind sixth place Hull City with just three games to go.

The gap to the relegation zone is also 13 points, leaving Birmingham with nothing to play for but pride in the final weeks of the term.

Davies’ position as head coach is under pressure as a result, and it remains to be seen who will lead the team into the following season.

The club will be turning their attention to the summer transfer window, where it could be another busy period at St. Andrew’s.

It was exclusively revealed by FLW earlier this week that Thomas Frank has emerged as a target for Birmingham in the event that Davies departs at the end of the season.

The Dane is currently out of work following his dismissal from Tottenham Hotspur in February, and he previously coached in the top flight with Brentford.

However, Ally McCoist has tipped the former Spurs boss to return to work with Crystal Palace, or potentially Fulham, with both clubs set to be targeting new head coaches in the summer.

Oliver Glasner has confirmed his exit from Selhurst Park, while Marco Silva is out of contract with the Cottagers, and the 63-year-old believes that Frank could be in line to take over.

“I could see Thomas Frank maybe getting the Palace job,” said McCoist, via Talksport.

“Or even the Fulham job if Marco Silva leaves.

“His future's still kind of uncertain, isn't it?

“Thomas Frank is the one I could easily see staying in London and coming back.”

Davies took charge of Birmingham in the summer of 2024 following their relegation from the Championship.

He was previously a coach at Spurs, working under Ange Postecoglou, who was replaced by Frank last summer.

The 52-year-old lasted 38 games in charge of the London outfit before being replaced by Igor Tudor, with the team at risk of relegation from the Premier League.

Birmingham are currently 14th in the table with just three games remaining, and they are one of five sides with 57 points from 43 games played.

Davies’ side have won just one of their last six league games, leaving them out of contention for a play-off place.

Next up for the Blues is a home clash against Preston North End this evening in a 7.45pm kick-off.

Thomas Frank appointment would be a big coup for Birmingham

Frank’s time at Tottenham was a disaster, but the fact the team have struggled even after his departure indicates there were larger problems at play there.

The 52-year-old is a proven Premier League manager with experience of earning promotion from the Championship, so there’s no doubt he’ll be in demand again soon.

If Birmingham could convince him to take the step down to the second tier, then that could be a real coup for the club.

However, contending with the likes of Crystal Palace and Fulham in the managerial market could hurt their chances of appointing Frank, if Davies is dismissed.
