Real Madrid’s emphatic 4–0 victory over Valencia was another statement of intent from Xabi Alonso’s side.
With Kylian Mbappe bagging a brace, Jude Bellingham dictating play, and summer signing Alvaro Carreras netting his debut goal, the night offered plenty of reasons for celebration among Los Blancos supporters.
Yet, beneath the euphoria, one concerning detail quietly slipped under the radar – Franco Mastantuono’s continued struggle for form.
The young Argentine, who had been left out of the starting XI in recent matches against Juventus and Barcelona, returned to the line-up on Saturday night.
Despite his energy and willingness to contribute, his performance was far from convincing.
Mastantuono worked hard off the ball but rarely made a meaningful impact in attack, often finding himself isolated.
As such, according to Defensa Central, Alonso and his coaching staff were not fully satisfied with the 18-year-old’s display.
It is now believed that Mastantuono could drop back to the bench when Real Madrid face Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League at Anfield later this week.
Mastantuono’s case is particularly interesting because his early months at Real Madrid were highly promising.

Amid significant media attention, the youngster adapted quickly to the rhythm of Spanish football and impressed in training.
However, as the season has progressed, the Argentine has shown signs of fatigue and inconsistency, perhaps inevitable for a player of his age adapting to such a demanding environment.
Against Valencia, Mastantuono was one of the few outfield players to complete the full 90 minutes.
This was not necessarily due to his influence, but rather part of a broader rotation strategy from Alonso, who opted to protect other players with heavier workloads.
The teenager, while always showing commitment, appeared to lack confidence in the final third, often hesitating in one-on-one situations and misjudging several attacking transitions.
For Mastantuono, the message from the coaching staff remains clear that patience and hard work are key.
Alonso has been open about his belief in developing young players, and the Argentine’s potential is still considered enormous within the club.
However, Real Madrid’s depth and attacking competition make it difficult for any young player to retain a starting role.
