Xabi Alonso admits it was an emotional moment for everyone at Chelsea after Mykhailo Mudryk made his long-awaited return to action.

The Ukraine international featured for the first time in over a year in Chelsea’s 1-0 pre-season friendly defeat to Juventus after having his doping case resolved.

“Yes, for sure, I’m really pleased for him,” the Chelsea boss said.

“It was emotional for everyone from the club to see him back, especially when I told him before the game that was my idea, that he could play 10-15 minutes.

“He was thrilled, for sure. After such a long period, to be back on the pitch was a great feeling for him and a great feeling for everyone as well.”

Chelsea were without Cole Palmer and Levi Colwill for the match against Juventus, but Alonso insisted there was no major cause for concern over either player.

“They had a few, not injuries, discomforts,” he said.

“Cole with a whack and Levi as well, so there was no point taking today’s risk.

“Hopefully they will be fine for Saturday.”
