Alphonso Davies has confirmed he will miss Canada’s World Cup opener against Bosnia and Herzegovina on 12 June, as he continues his recovery from the hamstring injury sustained with Bayern Munich last month.

“The first game of the tournament, it won’t be possible,” Davies said on the Sid Seixeiro Show.

“It hurts me to say it, but that’s the reality of injuries,” he added.

“Of course I want to play in the World Cup. Of course I want to play in front of my family and friends and help the team as much as I can.”

“Sometimes you have to sacrifice.”

Canada face Qatar on 18 June and Switzerland on 24 June in their remaining group matches, with his availability for either fixture still uncertain.
