The 24-year-old sustained the issue as Belgium beat theWorld Cup co-hosts 4-1 to progress to the quarter-finals and will play no part in the rest of the tournament.

Following the clash, he was seen crutches and wearing a protective brace around his right knee. Surgery is due to be scheduled and an ACL injury usually takes around nine to 12 months for full recovery.

As a result, Aston Villa are set to reassess their summer recruitment.Unai Emery's side did not plan to sign a central midfielder in the current window, but Onana's absence will lead to a re-think.

Emery had planned to build around Onana, Youri Tielemans and Boubacar Kamara for the upcomingPremier League season. The latter is due back in time for pre-season after being sidelined since January with a knee issue.

Onana's long-term injury could also see Aston Villa re-consider their stance on Ross Barkley. The 32-year-old, whose deal at Villa Park has just 12 months to run, had been expected to depart this summer, with Coventry City reportedly keen.
