Ruben Amorim joked that Sir Jim Ratcliffe offered the Manchester United manager a new contract after the pair met for talks this week.
The Portuguese tactician is under severe pressure after winning just one of their opening four Premier League matches, leaving them 14th in the table with four points.
Following a chastening defeat to Manchester City last Sunday, Amorim has now overseen 17 losses in 46 games since taking the reins last year. The Red Devils were also knocked out of the League Cup by fourth-tier Grimsby Town last month.
Man Utd co-owner Ratcliffe flew into Manchester this week to meet with Amorim, increasing speculation that the head coach could soon be sacked from his position.
However, Amorim said that he and the British billionaire engaged in “normal talks” about “normal things” in relation to the team.
“He was offering me a new contract!”, the 40-year-old joked in his pre-match press conference ahead of facing Chelsea at Old Trafford on Saturday.
“No, it is normally things to show support, explain that it is a long project. He said many times that it is my first season; for me, it is not.
“But it’s normal things. I spoke with him, with Omar [Berrada], Jason [Wilcox] just trying to see all the data around the team.
“So, a normal meeting, and we had several, but in this moment, it’s normal that people pay attention to that.”
With no midweek fixture to contend with, Amorim has had more time to work with his squad ahead of the Chelsea game. He insists his side are playing well, but admits they need to be more clinical in front of goal.
“We used the time to analyse the last game and the next game and prepare different things,” he said.
“I think we are playing well between the boxes. We need to be more clinical. If you see the numbers of shots, the xG, these things are all good but if you don’t score, it doesn’t matter.
“After the last game, the way we suffered the goals, we can avoid that. We are being naïve, we need to be more aggressive.
“To win more games we have to maintain the way we are playing but improve in the opponent’s box and our box. That has been the focus of the week, especially when you are playing Chelsea.
“When they cross, they have more guys inside the box and we suffered a bit with that against Fulham so we worked a lot during the week to be better at that.”
