Palmeiras closed the first window with Marlon Freitas and Jhon Arias, and are still targeting a centre-back for mid-year, with Anderson Barros outlining the plan and warning of interest in the squad after the World Cup.
"We had planned three moves, we did two. We wanted some very specific pieces," said the football director in an interview on the club’s TV channel.
"If we can bring in the centre-back we want, whether in May or June, we will have a more balanced second half."
"Palmeiras have a reference name for us, identified by market analysis in comparative fit with the team."
Barros did not name the defender, but the pursuit concerns Nino at Zenit. Palmeiras advanced talks and had the player’s approval in the first window, though Zenit, focused on the Russian title, ruled out a move early in the year. The club is open to discussions for the second half of the year.
The next Brazilian window runs from 20 July to 11 September, shortly after the 2026 tournament. "In each window there is very big pressure. The approaches are intense."
"When it finishes, the approaches will be enormous for them. But Palmeiras are prepared to withstand it. It has financial difficulties and budget needs, but it is prepared."
