Leeds United’s January priorities have sharpened after Daniel Farke’s recent switch to a 3-5-2 and injuries at centre-back, with Sevilla’s Ruben Vargas emerging as a creative target who could cost around £nine million. ABC reports that Sunderland and Andoni Iraola’s Bournemouth have also made enquiries.
When Leeds play a back four they have depth across the pitch, but moving to three centre-backs and two strikers leaves them light, especially if injuries bite. Joe Rodon went off against Sunderland, underlining the issue.
Farke reverted to a 4-3-3 after Rodon’s knock, a sign he is reluctant to throw Sebastiaan Bornauw straight in. A new centre-back and a striker are key, with cover needed in the final third.
Leeds still lack a player who can conjure something from nothing. Willy Gnonto offers flashes from the flank, but that consistent spark is missing.
Vargas, a Swiss international at Sevilla and a player Noah Okafor knows well, has been involved in seven La Liga goals from 12 outings this season. Landing him for a modest fee could be a bargain.
Sevilla were said to value Vargas at £13m in the summer, and while a sale is not a priority they could cash in if the price is right. They chose to sell Dodi Lukebakio to Benfica for a higher fee, and Premier League clubs now believe a deal is possible below £10m.
Vargas could fit either system and add creativity Leeds crave. Any lingering hope of signing Harry Wilson is over.
