While Manchester United are currently focusing on strengthening up top, Ruben Amorim would ideally like to revamp his goalkeeping options as well, including finding a high-quality replacement for Andre Onana.
The Cameroonian committed plenty of high-profile errors last season, both in the Premier League and the Europa League, and the only reason he started so many games was due to the performances of backup keeper Altay Bayindir.
INEOS want to move the ex-Inter Milan ace on, even offering his services to Saudi Pro League sides, but so far, only newly-promoted NEOM SC have shown any real interest.
The United No.1 has no interest in joining that outfit, and so far, the Red Devils are yet to receive any concrete offers from the cash-rich league.
Which is why, as per ESPN, Andre Onana still expects to start between the sticks for the 20-time English league champions next season.
And while the head coach would prefer to revamp the entire squad after a shambolic last season, such a massive overhaul cannot be expected to be completed in one window, so he has to prioritise certain positions over others.
“André Onana is under the impression that he will be at United next season. He’s got three years left on his contract and, so far, no firm offers have materialised from tentative interest from Saudi Arabia.
“Boss Ruben Amorim has been clear that after such a disastrous season no player can be sure of his place, but he can’t churn the entire squad in one summer.”
INEOS are not exactly flushed with cash, and after adding another creative midfielder and striker, they are likely to be left with very little money for further reinforcements.
They will have to depend on player sales to strengthen further, and only if the Cameroon international leaves will the club firm up their interest in Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez.
The Old Trafford side spoke to his camp in January as well, and are still interested, but for now, with no concrete decision taken about the former Ajax goalie, they have adopted a watching brief on Martinez.
“United have been alerted to Emiliano Martínez’s potential exit at Aston Villa, although for now they’re keeping a watching brief.”
Onana is not the only goalkeeper in the squad whose future is up in the air, with backup keeper Bayindir also expected to depart, with a return to Turkey most likely.
Third-choice keeper Tom Heaton’s contract was also up, but the club are locked in talks with him and all signs point towards the England international staying on.
