André Silva, 30, is close to rejoining FC Porto on a free transfer as talks progress. According to O Jogo, the Portugal international is not expected to take up an extension at Elche, where he scored 10 goals.

Negotiations have been ongoing for days. There is no agreement yet, but the parties are aligned and the forward is willing to accept a pay cut. He is expected to sign a one-year contract with an option for a further season.

Silva left Porto in 2016/17 when Milan paid €38 million after only a season and a half in the first team. He came through the academy and was promoted in 2015/16 at the age of 21 by Julen Lopetegui.

Under Nuno Espírito Santo the following year he delivered 21 goals and seven assists in 44 matches, earning his move to Italy. He later had spells with Sevilla, Eintracht Frankfurt, Leipzig, Real Sociedad, Werder Bremen and Elche.

Silva’s arrival would not end Porto’s search for another striker. The board remains active for an additional goalscorer, and Samu, their biggest investment, is only due back in November.

Earlier this week André Villas-Boas signalled openness to former players returning, pointing to the quality of those who left and could play for Porto again.
