Porto B’s players were offered €5,000 each to beat Benfica in the Segunda Liga finale, and they delivered with a 2-0 win. The pledge came from club president André Villas-Boas.
According to Mais Sport, the bonus was promised despite the match carrying no direct impact on the competition’s final standings.
Porto B had already secured recognition as the league’s best B team, triggering an additional €15,000 payment to each player used during the season.
More than 40 players featured for the B team across the campaign. The administration led by Villas-Boas could have spent over €120,000 on the Benfica match bonus alone, though some of those players usually work with the senior squad.
This bonus policy aligns with the president’s strategy of placing greater value on the club’s youth development, a priority he has repeatedly underlined.
