According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation has reached an agreement for Andrés Iniesta to become sporting director of the men's national team. The move looks towards 2026 and the 2030 World Cup Morocco will stage with Spain and Portugal.

Iniesta, 41, was seen in Rabat during the Africa Cup of Nations final. He retired in October 2024 after a season at Emirates Club in Dubai, following five years with Vissel Kobe in Japan. In recent months he has trained as a coach and sporting director.

The federation aims to strengthen its structure after recent successes, including finishing runners-up at the last Africa Cup on home soil and fourth at the 2022 World Cup in Dubai. Morocco also won the Under-20 World Cup in Chile in 2025, beating Argentina in the final. Bringing international stars into the project, such as Iniesta, forms part of that plan.

Walid Regragui led the side until today and is to depart after the recent Africa Cup. Mohamed Ouahbi, who coached Morocco to last year's Under-20 world title in Chile, has been chosen to replace him. At the most recent tournament, 14 of the 26 players were born outside Morocco, including five with Spanish passports.

Uncertainty remains over the 2030 World Cup final venue, with the Santiago Bernabéu, the Camp Nou or Casablanca's Hassan II Stadium in play. Signing the man who made Spain world champions is seen as a notable boost for Morocco.
