Andrew Hughes takes Athletic Bilbao set-piece post after Leicester exit | OneFootball

Andrew Hughes has been appointed Athletic Bilbao's set-piece specialist just days after leaving Leicester City.

The club said in a statement that he will take the role and join the team next Monday. It also highlighted previous spells with Crystal Palace, Norwich City, Sheffield Wednesday, Sheffield United and Bolton Wanderers.

Hughes departed Leicester last week following the appointment of Russell Martin. He spent two seasons at the King Power after arriving in 2024 from Norwich City to join Steve Cooper's staff.

He also worked with Scotland under Steve Clarke, replacing Austin MacPhee after MacPhee joined the Portuguese national team staff. Hughes was at the World Cup, where Scotland went out in the group stage.

His set-piece work at Leicester drew criticism. The Foxes scored 14 from set pieces last season and conceded 20, with only seven scored in the Premier League.

In Bilbao he links up with new head coach Edin Terzic, who reportedly approached him. The club finished 12th in La Liga last season and aim to return to the Champions League after appearing in the competition last term.
